A Dandenong cricket player who drove on the wrong side of a South Gippsland highway before colliding with a car claims his brakes were not working, a court has heard.
Mohammad Mudasi Soliman, 22, faced the Korumburra Magistrates’ Court on Thursday and pleaded guilty to driving in a manner dangerous.
Prosecutor Tim Cavanagh said witnesses were travelling in two cars on the South Gippsland Hwy in Ruby — between Korumburra and Leongatha — when they saw Soliman driving in a Honda sedan owned by his passenger.
The court heard Soliman overtook one car near a bend on a hill, and then crossed onto the opposite side of the road for about 500m as he approached a second vehicle.
But as that car turned onto Barnes Rd, Soliman - still on the wrong side of the highway - collided with it, causing the vehicle to plough into a fence of a nearby property.
The court heard Soliman did attempt to brake before the crash.
Both vehicles were written off and towed away from the scene.
There were no injuries.
In an interview with police, Soliman said the brakes of the car were not working.
Soliman’s lawyer told the court her client was born in Afghanistan, had a lack of experience, and did not know the Victorian road rules well.

She said Soliman was someone who gave back to his community, played cricket at the Dandenong North Cricket Club, and worked in a powder coating factory.
Soliman also paid a $1500 excess on his friend’s car.
Magistrate Andrew McKenna said Soliman’s driving was “undeniably” at a dangerous level.
Soliman was fined $1200 with conviction and his licence was cancelled and disqualified for nine months.
