Phillip Island residents have been curious about the helicopters flying over the skies in recent weeks.

Many sightings have been reported with locals taking to social media to express their curiosity.

“Does anyone know what the go is with the two dark helicopters that have been scouring and hovering over the Bay this afternoon and tonight,” one person posted in a local community page.

The Australian Army issued a statement to reveal what the helicopters were doing, revealing they were participating in training exercises.

“Australian Army personnel, vehicles and helicopters will operate in support of an important training exercise from August 15 to September 9, 2022,” the statement read.

These training exercises were set to take place in Sydney, Melbourne and the Greater Victorian Area and were focused on responses to “simulated terrorism scenarios”.

“The community can expect increased flying operations in the day and night. The public should not be alarmed if they see or hear military helicopters flying low over urban areas,” the statement continued.

Phillip Island resident Tracey Bowes said she would watch them from her place.

“I actually really enjoy watching their drills. It’s my day off today might go have a squiz,” she said.

People have also been warned they may see vehicles and “military personnel” carrying weapons however, no ammunition will be used in the training.

“The Australian Army appreciates the support of the community,” the statement said.
