A man has died after he went for a swim at a popular beach on Phillip Island.

A man has died after a swim at Phillip Island on Friday afternoon turned to tragedy.

Emergency services were called to Surf Beach after trouble began in the water about 3.30pm on Friday.

The man, who is yet to be formally identified, was pulled from the water by passers by but died at the scene.

A Victoria Police spokesman said the death was not being treated as suspicious.

“Police will prepare a report for the coroner following the death of a man at Surf Beach on Phillip Island,” he said.
