A Kilcunda resident has been identified as the man who died in a horror head-on crash in Lang Lang.
Emergency services were called to the South Gippsland Highway after two cars collided between Stanlake Road and Westernport Road on May 5.
A Victoria Police spokesman said police understand a white Nissan Patrol, that was seen travelling on the wrong side of the road at around 6.45pm, crashed into a car travelling in the opposite direction.
Sergeant Travis Cusack said the 61-year-old man from Kilcunda died at the scene.
He said the driver of the Nissan, a 32-year-old man from Koo Wee Rup, was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition.
Sgt Cusack said detectives from the major collision unit are investigating the crash.
“We are unable to determine whether it was intentional or not,” he said.
Superintendent David Cowan said several witnesses had come forward with information.
“It is still unknown why the driver veered onto the wrong side of the road,” Supt Cowan said.
“Drugs, alcohol and fatigue cannot be ruled out and erratic driving leading up to the collision will form part of the investigation.”
Supt Cowan said: “Tragically we have also seen multiple occasions this year where innocent motorists and pedestrians have been killed as a result of the actions of others.”
“This doesn’t just prematurely cut the life of an innocent person, it also shatters the lives of their families forever,” he said.
Cardinia SES captain Shane Honey said the unit provided lighting until the scene was cleared around 7am on May 6.
So far 20 people have lost their lives on roads in Greater Dandenong, Cardinia and Casey this year.
Anyone who witnessed the crash, has dashcam footage or saw the Nissan Patrol prior to the collision is urged to contact Crime Stoppers.
