A methed-up landscaper busted with scales and methamphetamine in his mum’s car says the birth of his son has motivated him to quit his drug habit.
Matthew John Coleman, 34, pleaded guilty at the Korumburra Magistrates’ Court on Thursday November 30 to possessing methamphetamine and unlicensed driving.
The court heard Coleman was driving on Broome Crescent in Wonthaggi on March 21 this year when he was pulled over by police.
Officers did checks and discovered Coleman was driving his mother’s car and did not hold a current licence.
Police then searched the car and found a black bag behind the centre console with a set of scales and 2.4mg of methamphetamine inside.
Coleman was interviewed at the Wonthaggi police station and was bailed to appear at the Korumburra Magistrates’ Court in July.
Coleman was asked about his licence status in the interview where he told police he knew it was disqualified.
“I got done 13 months ago and I did a course and I thought because the time was up I could drive again,” he said at the time.
When Coleman was asked about the drugs, he told them he bought them a week ago which costed $700.
Coleman also told officers he was a regular ice user.
He told the court he had given up drugs and has changed.
“It’s a very positive thing and to your credit that you’ve been motivated enough particularly by the birth of your son to do something about the drug use,” Magistrate Suzette Dootjes said.
“It’s a real concern to the courts when the drug use is in combination with driving and being in your car as well.”
Ms Dootjes fined Coleman $850 without conviction.
