The father of a promising footballer tragically killed in a road fatality shouted “f----- scumbag” at his son’s killer in court as he was being led away to start his jail sentence.

Jayden Colverd fronted the County Court for sentencing on Wednesday on charges of dangerous driving causing the death of Noah Peacock and failing to render assistance following the crash.

The court heard the 28-year-old had consumed alcohol and cannabis prior to getting behind the wheel and was disqualified from driving six months prior to the crash.

Following the collision at Jeetho, Colverd, 28, fled into bushes after a passing motorist helped him out of his mother’s Ford Falcon station wagon he was driving on South Gippsland Highway.

He blamed the crash on his dog which jumped on his lap, disrupting his driving for two seconds.

Colverd was jailed for four years and ordered to serve at least two years and nine months before being eligible for parole.

Emotions boiled over after the sentence was handed down, prompting Mr Peacock’s father Jason Peacock to yell out “f----- scumbag” as Colverd was led away.

James Peacock, wearing the jersey of Poowong Football Club where his son played, accompanied Noah Peacock’s mother Michelle to court.

Judge Noah Karapanagiotidis said Mr Peacock was driving a Ford Falcon sedan to footy training when Colverd crossed the centre line and caused the fatal collision.

A motorist Colverd overtook along South Gippsland Highway shortly before the incident described the latter going “like a rocket” and overtaking her in the “blink of an eye”.

The impact of the collision caused Mr Peacock’s car to slam into a tree and catch fire.

A motorist helped Colverd out of his car and while she was on the phone to emergency services, the killer driver started running away, saying he needed fresh air.

Motorists gave chase for 15 to 20 minutes before giving up.

Colverd was located by police along Jethro Rd about half an hour later and he was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital where he spent two months with a head injury.

“Your dangerous driving caused Noah’s death. Following the collision, you made no attempt to render assistance to Noah and instead fled the scene,” Judge Karapanagiotidis said.

“The profound pain and overwhelming grief experienced by Noah’s family, the loss of such a vibrant, young man has left a void that cannot be filled.

Mr Colverd, your actions have left a family and community devastated and it’s something you’ll have to live with,” she said.
