A controversial plan for a five-storey building near Inverloch’s foreshore has been withdrawn.
The proposal for a mixed use development at 2-4 The Esplanade had residents outraged after details were released about the project on February 22.
Bass Coast Shire chief executive Ali Wastie told The Bass Coast News the application was withdrawn but “no reason” was provided.
Ms Wastie said objections were still being received and about 60 had so far been processed.
Lisa Fenton said the withdrawal was a “great outcome”.
“Well done to everyone who objected,” she said.
“At least they know that anything big and ugly will not get past the people of Inverloch.”
The proposal included 40 apartments, an underground basement with 61 carparking spaces a gym and pool and four retail and commercial tenancies at ground floor.
An urban context report prepared by Hansen Partnership for the project’s developer, Forte Group Pty Ltd, said the design had “been configured to not harm the visual impact and image of the town centre of Inverloch”.
But some locals and visitors thought otherwise, with many calling the proposed development an “eyesore”.
Inverloch local Lesley Savige said the building looked “ugly”.
“I’m all for development but in my opinion it’s way, way too big,” she said.
“I personally think it’s too high and I would hate to see tall buildings along the seaside area.”
Leongatha resident Kate Danby said she would “hate to see Inverloch” overpopulated.
“One reason we moved to the area was because of the peaceful country warmth,” she said.
“I find this really sad.”
Forte Group Pty Ltd were contacted for comment.
