A couple in their 70s have been left “absolutely traumatised” after an alleged dog attack at Inverloch Farmers Market over the weekend.

Wayne Williams claims his wife and his shih tzu terrier were attacked by a dog of a “staffie appearance” at the market on September 19.

Mr Williams said they were walking their dog on a leash near the market around midday when they noticed a dog with a muzzle being walked by two other people.

“It struck us as strange that a muzzled dog was at the farmers market but took no more notice,” Mr Williams said.

He claims that “within seconds” the staffie-like dog had slipped its collar and muzzle and had come straight towards them.

“My wife has seen the dog from the corner of her eye and bent down to pick up our dog,” he said.

“The dog knocked my wife to the ground and grabbed our dog by the throat”.

Mr Williams said the staffie-like dog also bit his wife on the lower leg which resulted in a trip to the doctors.

“I jumped on the offending dog and punched it like a madman. This did not work so I gouged his eyes and let him go,” he said.

The shih tzu terrier owner said the experience was horrific and traumatising.

“The boyfriend of the owner [of the dog] came up to me and apologised and said they would pay if there were any damages,” Mr Williams said.

“He said his name was Robert and gave me his phone number”.

But Mr Williams claims the information was incorrect.

Mr Williams and his wife took their shih tzu terrier to Wonthaggi and Newhaven vet after the alleged incident.

“We are now $854.70 out of pocket plus $300 pair of sunglasses destroyed in the melee” he said.

The Bass Coast Shire Council is aware of the incident and is investigating.

Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
