A father of three from Traralgon who was busted speeding with cannabis in his system, has argued he is a “safe driver”.

David Anderson, 38, pleaded guilty at Latrobe Valley Magistrates Court to three charges including drug-driving, speeding and driving while suspended.

The court heard Anderson was seen by Victoria Police driving at a fast speed on Kay St in Traralgon at 12:10pm on November 4, 2019.

A speed detector found that Anderson was travelling at 80km/h in a 60km/h zone.

Anderson was intercepted by police and underwent a preliminary breath test which returned a negative result.

However police thought there was a prescribed illicit drug in Anderson’s system so he underwent a further test that found the presence of cannabis.

Anderson, who represented himself in court, said he lost concentration.

“I’m not making any excuses for it, it’s just lack of concentration every now and again,” Anderson said.

“I’m a safe driver although my record probably states the opposite.”

Magistrate Simon Garnett condemned Anderson’s actions.

“Do you watch the news on TV at night?” Magistrate Garnett said.

“Do you see what happens everyday on the road when people speed and have drugs in their system or drink too much alcohol? Tragedy happens.”

Anderson said he understood the severity of his charges.

“I’m a good driver. I just get caught every now and then again,” he said.

“It’s about the safety of everyone else on the road,” Magistrate Garnett said.

Anderson was fined $1500 and disqualified from driving for seven months.
