A Gippsland concreter whose partner died while using GHB was busted with the drug in his car and was previously caught behind the wheel on meth in Wonthaggi.

Daniel John Wilson, 47, appeared at the Korumburra Magistrates’ Court on Thursday where he pleaded guilty to charges including possessing a controlled weapon without excuse, drug driving and possessing GHB.

The court heard Wilson, who is a father, was detected doing 73km/h in a 60km/h zone on the Bass Highway in Wonthaggi on March 28 this year.

After a breath test returned negative, Wilson underwent two oral fluid tests which returned positive for methamphetamine.

In an interview with police when officers asked why he was drug driving he said, “as far I knew, I wasn’t”.

On an earlier occasion, Wilson was pulled over by police who found nunchucks, a fold out razor, a bottle of GHB, scales, syringes, glass pipes, a box cutter and a taser in his car.

Wilson was arrested and taken to the Leongatha police station.

In an interview, he told police the box cutter and razor were used for work.

The court heard Wilson had a prior criminal history and his partner died from GHB, which was a “wake up call” for him.

Magistrate Andrew Halse said people “die when they use meth as well”.

Mr Halse said everyone thinks death from drugs wouldn’t happen to them.

“Here in your circumstances it has happened to your loved one,” Mr Halse said.

“Hopefully that has had an impact on you in a positive sense.”

Mr Halse urged Wilson to seek drug and alcohol counselling and to “rid himself” of his problems.

Wilson was convicted, fined $2500 and his licence was disqualified for 12 months.
