Police have identified the elderly driver who lost her life in a horror two-car smash in South Gippsland.

Emergency services were called to the corner of Foster-Mirboo Rd and the South Gippsland Highway at about 7.20am on Monday after reports emerged of a vehicle collision.

It’s believed one of the vehicles was making a right-hand turn onto the Highway, when it collided with an oncoming vehicle.

On Wednesday, police confirmed the driver of one of the vehicles, a 79-year-old woman from Woorarra West, died at the scene.

The driver of the second vehicle, a 48-year-old Dumbalk woman, sustained injuries to her legs and was taken to Traralgon Hospital in a serious but stable condition.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said the exact circumstances surrounding the collision are yet to be determined and an investigation is ongoing.

“Anyone who witnessed the crash, with information or dashcam footage is urged to contact Crime Stoppers,” she said.

There have been 158 lives lost on Victorian roads so far this year, with 91 of those occurring in regional areas – a 30 per cent jump on 2021.
