A car bursts into flames on Church St, Cowes

Fire crews have rushed to the scene after a car dramatically exploded in flames on a main street in Cowes, south of Melbourne. See the pictures.

A car has burst into flames on a main street in Cowes.

The car exploded just before 1pm on Friday, with emergency services being called shortly afterwards.

Witnesses said they heard the explosion from streets away and then saw flames and a lot of smoke.

CFA was notified to reports of a car fire on Church St in Cowes at 1pm.

Three CFA trucks and volunteer firefighter crews from Phillip Island are currently on scene.

Police have deemed the blaze non-suspisious.

The owner of the car was going down Church Street when he stopped to get some food at the general store.

He turned off car noticed and noticed a puff of smoke under the bonnet. He thought it was strange, went and got food, came out and lots of smoke was coming from under car.

The car then ignited.

The incident was declared under control at 1.18pm.

Phillip Island crews will remain on scene and a San Remo pumper is currently responding in support.

Police are now on scene and Church St is closed.
