A Ballarat North man held a child “hostage” and demanded she have sex with him before swinging a punch and lunging at her face with a screwdriver when she refused.
The terrifying ordeal began for the 14-year-old girl when Warren Carter, 46, dragged her into his bedroom and tried to pull down her pants.
The girl and a 16-year-old friend visited Carter’s home together on the night of March 13 this year.
Later into the night, Carter became angry and demanded the girl have sex with him, telling her “I need a f***, and you’re not leaving this room until you have sex with me”.
While they argued in his bedroom, Carter swung a punch at the girl before picking up a screwdriver and lunging at her face.
The girl managed to escape injury from his onslaught by moving out of the way.
Carter then began smashing things up and tried to block the doorway of hid bedroom to prevent the girl from leaving, who was able to get past him.
A 42-year-old man who was an acquaintance of Carter’s and at his house at the time, tried to open the door and move Carter from the entrance to allow the girl to escape.
The County Court heard on Wednesday both the 14-year-old and her 16-year-old friend were “petrified” as Carter locked the front and back doors of the house, locking them inside.
He then demanded the children hand over their phones.
Carter threatened to shoot the acquaintance who tried to help get the children out of the house.
Once the man was ejected from the house by Carter he called the police.
When police arrived at the house, Carter told the children to hide at the back who were found by officers in a “hysterical and distressed” state.
The 14-year-old girl later told police she felt like a hostage.
On March 18, police arrested Carter at his home and found about 12 sexual images of the 14-year-old girl on his phone.
Prosecutor Stephen Devlin read out to the court a victim impact statement written by the 16-year-old child.
“I’ll always feel very angry deep down that it happened,” it reads. “I feel extremely uncomfortable being around older men.
“I get nightmares and wake up screaming about the incident.”
Defence barrister Daniel Sala said his client had been abused as a child.
Mr Sala told the court Carter also became addicted to alcohol, after developing a habit that resulted from him drinking every day from the age of 12.
In September, Carter pleaded guilty to charges including possession of child abuse material, two counts of false imprisonment, and one count of make threat to inflict serious injury.
The plea hearing was adjourned to December 7, for the completion of a neuro-psychological assessment and report of Carter.
