The Stawell community has rallied around a mum-of-three and her family as she faces the fight of her life.

In August, Jessica Jones was diagnosed with breast cancer, which has since spread to her lymph node.

The hospitality worker gave up her job to undergo intensive treatment, which included a mastectomy at Ballarat Base Hospital, 20 weeks of chemotherapy and four weeks of daily radiation.

Ms Jones will also need further surgery.

The disease and her inability to work, means Ms Jones, her partner Mat and their three children are struggling.

Family friend Elisha Swain-Murphy set up a GoFundMe fund-raiser, which has raised a little over $5000.

Ms Swain-Murphy has also raised money at local events, saying the Jones family had a long history of generosity, including helping another family through a cancer diagnosis.

“Whenever anything comes up where they can help, they always do,” Ms Swain-Murphy said.

“They’ve organised so many fund-raisers for other locals who have fallen on hard times.

“We all know any kind of lasting illness can become a very big financial burden, especially when you have three young children.

“Jess is one of the hardest working people I know and not being able to work and earn money for her family is weighing a heavy toll on her.”

Stawell Harness Racing Club held a sponsored race day in December for the family while the Stawell West State School held a carnival to raise money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation.

The Gift Hotel, where both Ms Jones and her husband Mat once worked, has organised a pink party to raise money for the Jessica Jones Fund.

“Jess has been so transparent through her Facebook page with her journey, because she really does appreciate the amount of people coming forward and donating money to help her and her family out,” Ms Swain-Murphy said.

“So many people have reached out with things as simple as prepaying $100 at the local fruit shop for food packages to be made up for them.”
