A man accused of holding a woman at gunpoint before fleeing and shooting at shopfronts in Buninyong has appeared in court.

Police have charged a man accused of holding a woman at gunpoint in Buninyong last week.

Troy Barnes, 29, was charged with kidnapping and conduct endangering life.

Police alleged he used a firearm to hold a woman known to him hostage in Buninyong in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

He is also alleged to have fired shots at multiple buildings in Buninyong including an op shop, the post office, a bank and a local eatery.

Police said Barnes fled on foot along Geelong Road, broke his weapon into pieces, and dumped them in the roadside scrub.

Police arrested him after he knocked on the home of a Buninyong family at 6.30am who phoned police.

The family of four secretly called the police.

Barnes briefly faced the magistrate’s court and has been remanded and will return to court on November 18.
