One person has died and another is in a critical condition after a car crash in Talbot on Thursday morning.

Emergency services attended the head-on collision near the intersection of Ballarat-Maryborough Road and Pollocks Road about 8.15am.

It was raining when the crash, which occurred on a straight stretch of the Ballarat-Maryborough Rd, took place.

The driver of one vehicle, a 65-year-old man from Avoca, died at the scene, and the male passenger of the same car received minor injuries and was driven taken to hospital.

The driver of the other vehicle was flown to the Alfred Hospital in a critical condition.

The roads near the Ballarat-Maryborough and Pollocks roads intersection were blocked throughout the morning.

Victoria Police’s Major Collision Unit travelled from Melbourne to assess the scene.

This year, 149 people have died on Victorian roads, compared with 131 at the same time last year.
