A driver involved in a deadly multi-car crash in Bacchus Marsh has been charged after previously being under police guard in hospital.

A 19-year old driver has been charged over a fatal multi-car collision in Bacchus Marsh on Friday.

Police confirmed the Maddingley man, who had been under police guard in hospital, was charged with one count of dangerous driving causing death.

The man’s vehicle, a 2005 yellow Ford Falcon ute, was involved in the horror collision on Diggers Rest-Coimadai Road in Coimadai, which also involved a truck, a bus and other cars.

A 59-year-old Mount Egerton man, who was driving a silver station wagon, died after his car left the road and crashed into a tree about 3.40pm on July 8.

The driver of the truck was trapped for a short time, and in the bus, only the driver was present.

The Maddingley man has been bailed and will appear before Melbourne Magistrates’ Court on Monday.

Police believe the 19-year-old was driving from Diggers Rest towards Bacchus Marsh on Diggers Rest-Coimadai Rd before the crash.

This year, 131 people have died on Victorian roads, compared with 113 last year.
