A thuggish vigilante father-son duo have avoided prison after they held a man hostage and brutally bashed him over a drug debt.

Corey Michael Taylor, 23, and Ian Taylor, 47, faced Ballarat Magistrates’ Court on Thursday having earlier pleaded guilty over a savage assault and false imprisonment.

Prosecutors wanted the father and the son, from Gordon east of Ballarat, to be put in jail for their “serious offending of a vigilante nature” on December 2, 2024.

The court heard that the pair drove to a location in Mount Egerton and confronted a man over a dispute he had with Corey involving a drug debt.

It’s understood Corey owed the man money and his car had been taken as collateral.

The Taylors got out of their ute and “straight away” began assaulting the victim, punching him and tackling him to the ground.

Corey, who has an intellectual and developmental disability, pulled out a taser and used it on the victim during the assault.

The older Taylor was not found suitable for a community correction order, but Magistrate Julia Barling gave him one to last three years.

She told Ian he needed to “do better” as Corey’s role model.

“Things got way out of control, and you ought to have done something to stop it,” she said.

Ian responded: “Well, I did, Your Honour.”

“Could have been a lot worse,” he said.

Corey was ordered to forfeit drugs and the taser.

The court heard he had rehabilitation services lined up and was already involved with a social worker.

He also received a community corrections order of three years, and was fined $500 for driving an unregistered car.

“You cannot take the law into your own hands,” Ms Barling said.

“You cannot use weapons.

“It will not be tolerated.”

Both men must complete 75 hours of community work as part of their court orders.
