A former Ballarat butcher attacked his neighbour with a garden stake and then told police he had “no idea” about the incident.

Ballarat East man Joseph Royle, 52, faced Ballarat Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday charged with assault.

The court heard that on July 11, 2024, Royle’s neighbour went to inspect his car, which was parked adjacent to Royle’s front yard, after hearing Royle had thrown eggs at it.

When he was looking at the vehicle, Royle emerged calling him a “dog” and a “pedophile”.

He then picked up a garden stake and raised it above his shoulders, swinging at the neighbour and hitting his right forearm.

When police went to interview Royle, he said he had been asleep and had “no idea” what the officers were talking about.

Royle pleaded guilty and was fined $500.
