A man who escaped a prison near Ballarat and became the subject of a fugitive squad manhunt has appeared in court more than six weeks after his disappearance.

A man has faced court more than six weeks after he fled from a prison near Ballarat.
Daniel John Briffa, who had been at the centre of a fugitive squad manhunt, was detained by police in Ballarat East on Thursday morning.
The 50-year-old was close to being released from Langi Kal Kal Correctional Centre before vanishing on September 4.
On Thursday afternoon he appeared at Ballarat Magistrates’ Court for a remand hearing.
He told the court he was withdrawing from methamphetamine and did not apply for bail.
Briffa faces one charge of escape from prison and will return to court for a plea on November 28.
