Bunkers Hill crash: Woman dead, girl fighting for life

Police have identified the young woman killed in a crash on the outskirts of Ballarat as a little girl fights for her life.

The tragic truth about road deaths in Australia

A woman has died and a child is fighting for life following a two-car collision on the outskirts of Ballarat.

Police believe two cars collided at Bunkers Hill, near the intersection of Finchs and Greenhalghs roads, about 4.50pm Monday.

A 24-year-old female passenger in one of the cars died. She has since been identified as being a Mount Clear woman.

Meanwhile, a child from the same car was flown to the Royal Children’s Hospital.

A spokesperson from Ambulance Victoria said the primary school aged child suffered facial and pelvis injuries and was in a critical condition.

On Tuesday the hospital confirmed the child remained in a critical, but stable, condition.

The male driver of that car suffered a shoulder injury and was taken to Ballarat Base Hospital via road ambulance.

The female driver of the other vehicle and her passengers were all assessed by paramedics.

They were all believed to be in stable conditions.

Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit have been combing through the scene to piece together what occurred.

Other emergency services, including volunteers from the State Emergency Service, were at the scene well into the night.

The tree lined, rural road, located just up from Delacombe Town Centre, is known to be dangerous to locals.

People are advised to continue to avoid the area while the investigation continues.

The intersection remains closed, according to the Vic Roads website.

It comes as roadworks on nearby main thoroughfare, Latrobe Street, will prompt closures until the end of the week.

Anyone who witnessed the incident, has dash cam footage or any other information that could assist police is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or submit a confidential report at www.crimestoppersvic.com.au.
