Ballarat is on track to record its coldest September day on record as heavy snow blankets the region.
Snow has fallen in western Victoria after a short winter blast.
Weather Bureau senior forecaster Keris Arndt said the city saw snowfall after midday, which will ease off into showers later in the afternoon.
“We’re on track at the moment in Ballarat to see its coldest September day on record,” he said.
“We’ll need to wait until the end of the afternoon to see if that’s actually to be confirmed, but at this stage it’s only zero degrees in Ballarat at the moment.”
The maximum temperature today was 5.8C, with the previous lowest maximum record for September 6C.
“It seems pretty unlikely we’re going to get back up to there,” Mr Arndt said.
He said snow had been reported as low as 200 metres above sea-level in the southwest of the state.
“The snow is just today, it is going to stay pretty chilly over the weekend, but returning to more spring like conditions next week,” Mr Arndt said.
