Police have charged a man from Ballarat Central for his part in an alleged bashing that left a man in an induced coma.

Detectives from the Ballarat Divisional Response Unit continue to investigate a serious assault in Black Hill in December last year.

Emergency services were called to reports of two people assaulting a man in his 20s on Peel Street North, near Chisholm Street, about 10.30pm on December 17.

Investigators believe that three men approached the victim, and two allegedly assaulted him.

The trio fled the scene.

Paramedics took the victim to Ballarat Base Hospital in a critical condition with upper body injuries.

Ballarat police said he was then transferred to Royal Melbourne Hospital in an induced coma.

Police have since charged a 27-year-old Ballarat Central man with intentionally causing injury and affray.

He was bailed and will face Ballarat Magistrates Court in August.

A 20-year-old man from Ballarat North was also arrested but has been exonerated in relation to the incident.
