Ballarat Carols by Candlelight battles ‘critical funding gap’, possible cancellation

Santa’s sleigh is at risk of not stopping by Ballarat for a beloved tradition this December as an “urgent” appeal is issued to keep the annual event afloat.

A “cherished” Ballarat tradition could be cancelled this year if a funding shortfall is not made up in time to properly plan the Christmas celebration.

Ballarat’s Carols by Candlelight dates back about 70 years, with the free event in more recent iterations drawing roughly 10,000 people to Mars Stadium in December.

But the committee behind the event since 2019 has issued an “urgent call for support” in the face of a “critical funding gap”.

Committee secretary Carolyn Bennett said that while the carols continue to have the support of the City of Ballarat, the loss of a principal sponsor in 2023 and the existing financial hardships of local businesses meant the 2024 event was at risk.

The carols cost about $50,000 and the committee is seeking $20,000 by way of an online fundraiser to prevent their cancellation.

“We recognise the financial pressures facing everyone this year, but we are calling on the Ballarat community to consider contributing what they can to help make Carols by Candlelight a reality,” Ms Bennett said.

“The event has become a cherished tradition, showcasing local talent and uniting the community in festive cheer.”

Ms Bennett said a major shortfall in funding could turn the event into a biannual occasion, with the carols committee to vote in August about how best to proceed.

“It’s just a lovely event to tie up the end of the year with super high quality performers and musicians,” she said.

“It’s an event we’re really proud of and we think the community loves it too.

“We’re hoping people will rally together and help us out a bit this year.”
