A 15-year-old boy is in an induced coma after receiving horrific burns while working on a car.
Codi Walmsley, from Hamilton in the state’s southwest, went to take the radiator hose off the bottom of a radiator on Wednesday.
As he loosened the radiator clamp he was hit with boiling hot liquid.
Codi instinctively covered his face with his hands to protect his eyes from the liquid and suffered substantial burns to his hands, as well as burns to his arms, face, neck, and torso.
He was flown to Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne where he is currently in an induced coma with breathing support — likely for the next seven days — because the swelling around his throat and airways is so severe.
He is expected to need skin grafts on his hands at some point during what is expected to be a six to 12 week stay in hospital.
Aunty Brook Walmsley described the teen as “not your everyday 15-year-old”.
“He is so well known and respected by so many in the community,” she said.
“He’s so well known around Balmoral and Hamilton and Cavendish. He’s an excellent drummer and guitarist.”
The family has travelled to Melbourne to be by the teen’s side, with Ms Walmsley setting up a GoFundMe to help them.
Already, it’s raised more than $6000 from more than 70 donations.
“It’s just to help out with everything. We all want to take turns being there for Codi,” Ms Walmsley said.
Codi’s dad, Jay, is staying at his bedside and stepping away from work while his son recovers.
“I just want to send out my absolute appreciation and gratitude to everybody that has helped and supported us, even the kind words have been such a comfort for the family,” Ms Walmsley said.
