North Albury cannabis crop: Man allegedly broke man’s skull, busted with cannabis plants

A man in his 30s will face serious charges after an alleged fight with another man that left him with a suspected fractured skull and bleeding on the brain.

Police have discovered a drug crop in a home after a fight where a man allegedly broke another man’s skull with a tradie’s tool.

Police were told that a 50-year-old man had gone to the home of another man known to him, a 36-year-old, on Wantigong Street about 3pm Wednesday.

It‘s believed a fight broke out between the pair, with the younger man allegedly hitting the older man in the head, arm and knee with a tradesman’s spirit level.

The 50-year-old was ultimately flown from Albury Base Hospital to Melbourne with a suspected fractured skull, bleeding on the brain and lacerations to his leg and arm.

Officers attached to Murray River Police District were notified and established a crime scene at the home where they alleged also discovered a hydroponic cannabis set up.

The younger man was arrested just after 9.30pm Wednesday.

Police will allege he tried to flee from officers, with a female officer sustaining a laceration to her hand during the arrest.

That man was also taken to hospital for injuries sustained in the earlier alleged fight.

As part of further inquiries, the police search of the man’s home, officers seized 58 prohibited plants, as well as loose cannabis.

The 36-year-old was released from hospital and taken to Albury Police Station where he was charged with common assault, two counts of reckless wounding, recklessly inflict grievous bodily harm, enhance indoor cannabis cultivation, supply cannabis more than an indictable quantity, and possess prohibited drug.

He has been refused bail to appear before Albury Local Court today.
