A Melbourne man has been killed in a freak bike accident in the state’s alpine region.

The 49-year-old struck a metal fence while riding a bike about 4pm on Tuesday near Howitt Park in Bright.

The Border Mail reported the man flipped over his handlebars before landing on his head and breaking his neck.

The report said the incident was witnessed by his wife. The pair had been visiting the area while holidaying.

A Victoria Police spokesperson said the man was unable to be revived and a report would be prepared for the coroner.

“It’s believed a man was riding a bike along Riverside Ave when he crashed into a metal fence about 4.05pm,” the spokesperson said.

“Despite the efforts of emergency services, the man sadly died at the scene.

“Wangaratta Highway Patrol officers will investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.”

An Ambulance Victoria spokesperson confirmed paramedics had attended the scene.

The park where the incident occurred sits on the Ovens River and is popular among locals and visitors to the town.
