Greg Godkin: Tributes for Donald CFA member found unresponsive at station

A long serving CFA member has been remembered for his loyal and dedicated service, after he died at Donald fire station this week despite efforts to revive him.

Tributes are pouring in for a long serving respected member of the CFA, after he died at Donald fire station this week.

The CFA is mourning the loss of Donald brigade member and fire investigator Greg Godkin, 75, who died late on Tuesday after returning from operational duties.

“Long-serving member Greg Godkin was found unresponsive at the station by another member and despite efforts to revive him, passed away,” the CFA posted online.

“Our deepest sympathies go out to Greg’s family, friends and colleagues at the Donald brigade – the CFA family grieves with them today.

“Family, brigade members, as well as the many CFA members who knew Greg through his almost 60 years of service to our organisation, are being supported by our wellbeing team. We know that the thoughts of all CFA members are with them today.”

Mr Godkin joined the CFA in 1965 as a junior member and has held roles including captain of Donald brigade, group officer and VFBV delegate.

“He was well known not only across District 18 but across the region, due to his role as a fire investigator,” the CFA posted.

“His wife Jenny and son Matt are active members of the Donald brigade. Greg is also survived by his daughter Sally and many grandchildren.

“Our hearts are heavy, but we want to acknowledge and recognise Greg’s loyal and dedicated service over many decades, supporting and protecting his community.”

The Donald CFA brigade posted: “It is with great regret and sadness that we inform our community of the passing of ex captain, ex group officer, CFA fire investigator, current firefighter with over 55 years dedicated service, life member and friend of the Donald Fire Brigade, Greg Godkin. You will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all family and friends.”

Brigades from across the state have also posted tributes to Mr Godkin.

“Greg conducted many structure investigations in the Red Cliffs area, his kindness and professionalism will be missed,” the Red Cliffs Fire Brigade posted.
