A North Albury disability worker split at innocent man’s head open in a violent road rage attack, a court has heard.

Damian Allitt, 45, pleaded guilty to a string of driving and assault charges in Albury Local Court on Monday.

Court documents showed the victim was driving home when Allitt sped up and overtook him on a dual lane roundabout on Thurgoona Dr about 9.45am on April 16 2021.

Allitt then failed to give way when the lanes merged, and the victim beeped his horn in frustration.

The court heard Allitt slammed on his brakes, causing the victim’s vehicle to skid to avoid crashing into Allitt’s black Ford territory.

The vehicles continued on Thurgoona Dr before Allitt pulled over and signalled for the victim to do the same, pointing at him aggressively.

But the victim feared for his safety and kept driving.

Allitt then followed the victim home where he punched him in the head.

The victim drove himself to Albury Base Hospital where he required nine stitches.

Allitt’s defence solicitor Mark Cronin said his client had not offended in 10 years.

He said his client was working as a disability support worker, and had a 21-year-old daughter, who had a miscarriage around the time of his offending.

“It’s a shame he finds himself before the court after such a significant time of being offence free,” Mr Cronin said.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Andrew Coombs said the threshold for jail had been crossed.

But Magistrate Richard Funston took into account his guilty plea.

“I’m not going to lock you up today,” Mr Funston said.

“You can hopefully get on and keep that employment.

“I can accept this behaviour was old behaviour and it’s not you.

“Don’t use this as an excuse to get back on the booze because that would be a disaster.”

Allitt was sentenced to an 18-month community corrections order, and disqualified from driving for 12 months.
