A Wodonga hoon with a need for speed and a suspended driver’s licence was busted drag racing in Albury, a court has heard.
Bradlee Herbert, 19, pleaded guilty to a string of driving offences at Albury Local Court on Monday.
Court documents show Herbert raced the driver on Mate St on June 19 2021.
Herbert stopped at the traffic light on Fallon St when another driver asked him to race.
When the lights turned green Herbert accelerated to 101km/h in a 60km/h zone.
But police were driving the opposite direction and caught Herbert, did a U-turn and followed him as he turned onto North St and ran a red light.
The documents said police saw the vehicle turn into Central Caravan Park.
Police saw Herbert walk out of the caravan park with a friend but when questioned he denied any involvement in the race.
Police later found his maroon Ford Falcon parked at the caravan park with false number plates attached.
Herbert was questioned again and admitted his involvement in the street race.
He told police he had picked the car up in Thurgoona and driven it home.
Herbert, who represented himself in court, said he had no money to register the car and had false number plates on it just to drive home.
“I’m stupid for doing what I did,” Herbert told the court.
“The dude pulled up beside me and opened his door and asked me to race him. I guess it was stupid of me.
“After it happened I started beating myself up every day about it.”
Herbert said his Victorian driver’s licence had been suspended in January for six months.
Magistrate Richard Funston said he would disqualify Herbert for the minimum period due to his young age, and guilty plea.
Herbert was disqualified from driving for three months and fined $900.
