Behind the mic: Community radio legends of regional Victoria

Kyle and Jackie O may have taken over some Melbourne airwaves but in regional Victoria, they’re not the stars.

Forget Kyle and Jackie-O, these local legends are the real stars of Melbourne radio with some on air for 40-odd years.

These dedicated community radio stars work tirelessly to bring entertainment to their local community from the early morning hours to late at night.

Meet some of our community radio stars.

Tim & Jess, KRock 95.5FM

Listeners can hear Tim and Jess’s voice and banter on Geelong’s KRock 95.5FM weekdays 3pm to 6pm.

Jean and Phyllis, Triple H 96.5FM

Two icons of Horsham’s Triple H radio station are Jean Darnell and Phyllis Lavithis.

The dynamic duo are also the President and Vice president of the radio station.

Triple H, 96.5FM, is a volunteer run radio station supporting community groups and organisations in Horsham.

Dallas Daniel, Radio Mansfield 99.7FM

Dallas Daniel loves being on the airways in Mansfield.

Daniel has been gracing the airways since 2003, with her current show running on Wednesday mornings from 6.30am.

On ‘Wednesday Breakky with Dallas’ listeners will hear the morning news and classic tunes.

While Daniel loves her rock music she limits herself to only two rock songs before 8.30am to not startle her listeners too early in the morning.

Radio Mansfield has been on air since 1995 and all the shows are lifestreamed online.

Nicko On The Bizzo, Radio KLFM

Ian ‘Nicko’ Nicholls is a longstanding voice on Bendigo’s airways.

His voice can be heard on his show Nicko on the Bizzo on Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

Nicholls started at Radio KLFM in 2000 after a long radio career at ABC Bendigo and on commercial radio.

Radio KLFM prides itself on playing classic hits from the 1950s and beyond on repeat.

Ellie Wallace, Radio EMFM 104.7

The Friday afternoon slot on Radio ELFM in Echuca is taken by Ellie Wallace with her iconic show An Afternoon with Ellie.

Wallace originally began her show in early 2000 and after a short break returned to the air in 2018, debuting her second show Jazz Giants.

Radio EMFM can be heard on 104.7 in Bendigo and the surrounding areas.

Chris Thompson, Bendigo 88.7

Chris Thompson is a graduate of Deakin University and the host of Behind the Scenes, the weekly arts and culture program for Vision Australia Radio aired on 88.7FM in
Bendigo.

Behind the Scenes goes to air every Monday night at 9pm and is repeated the following Saturday at 6.30pm

Rosa Gilberto, One FM 98.5

Rosa Gilberto has been involved with One FM 98.5 for more than 30 years.

Her “passion is radio” and she loves playing music for her “lovely listeners”.

Greg Boots, OKR FM 98.3FM & 97.1FM

Mitchell Shire residents can get their country music fix every Monday night with Greg Boots from 6.30pm to 9.30pm.

Boots pays a mix of country genres from original Australian ballads to bluegrass and country rock.

He broadcasts from the Kilmore Racing Complex for OKR FM.

Lucky Dunn, Gippsland FM 104.7

Lucky Dunn presents Evergreen on Gippsland FM 104.7.

Evergreen airs every Monday afternoon from 12pm to 2pm and offers listeners an easy listening mix.

Simon Dowdle, Mildura FM 106.7

Simon Dowdle brings The Afternoon D’Light on Friday’s to HOT FM in Mildura.

Dowdle has been a part of HOT FM since 2018 when he brought listeners a party mix on a Saturday night before moving to his arvo gig.

Hot FM 106.7 provides a local broadcast to Sunraysia on 106.7 and 90.7 for Robinvale, Wentworth and Ouyen, with a high-quality community broadcasting service.

Eileen Middleton, Radio 2 REM

Eileen Middleton presents Honky Tonk Heaven on the Radio 2 REM.

Eileen Middleton is a radio star from Albury Wodonga.
