A magistrate has slammed a Culcairn hoon with a serious alcohol problem after he was caught driving four times the legal alcoholic limit.

Aliki Ritalau Hussain, 19, pleaded guilty to high-range drink driving, and not displaying his red P plates in Albury Local Court on Monday.

Court documents show police were stationary at the BP service station on Wagga Rd when they saw a Ford Ranger doing “well in excess” of the 60km/h speed limit.

When police pulled the vehicle over, Hussain was in the driver’s seat and had a passenger with him.

Police noticed Hussain was drunk because his eyes were glazed and his speech was docile.

He returned a positive breath test of 0.196, and had no red P plates on his car.

Hussain was arrested and taken to Albury police station where he returned an alcohol reading of 0.163.

He told police he had three bourbons and cokes between 3.30pm and 8.30pm and had eaten KFC.

Magistrate Richard Funston said he believed Hussain must have an alcohol problem to record such high readings.

“Mr Hussain has an alcohol problem, anyone who has a reading like that, that’s what it indicates,” Mr Funston said.

“The reality is, people don’t just drink once with a reading like that.

“If you’ve had that much to drink and you decide to drive … the fact that you’ve even got the capacity to get in the car provides real concern to the court.

“Most people who are over three times the limit wouldn’t even be able to navigate.”

Mr Funston said he could see Hussain’s mother, who was supporting him in court alongside his stepfather, nodding in agreement at the back of the courtroom.

“You need to have alcohol counselling Mr Hussain,” he said.

Hussain was disqualified from driving for six months with an interlock for 24 months, and placed on a community corrections order for 12 months with supervision and the condition he receive alcohol counselling.
