More than 45 Victorian doctors, nurses and health workers have come to the attention of medical authorities in the past year, with their medical licences coming under review.

Included on the list are doctors who authorities claim prescribed drugs of dependence to vulnerable patients for their own use, nurses they say failed to check on brain-damaged patients leading to death, doctors who provided false vaccination exemption certificates and health care professionals who defrauded international students.

Among the 45 medical professionals who came under scrutiny in the last year were 24 doctors, 11 nurses, six psychologists, four pharmacists, two dentists and one podiatrist.

After case reviews the health watchdog, The Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA) , cancelled the registration of nine medical professionals, disqualified 10, suspended nine and publicly reprimanded seven.

We have excluded the names of those health practitioners that were not named by AHPRA on their website because of suppression orders, as well as those practitioners who were tried in court in a different state. We also excluded those who had their registration disqualified, suspended or cancelled for a few months in the past year but are not currently under an order.

Most of the practitioners were from the Melbourne Metropolitan region, including those at Blackburn, Tookrak, Mount Waverley, and Caulfield north. While not barring regional Victorian cities like Ballarat, Mildura, Shepparton and Geelong.

AHPRA ensures that only health practitioners with the skills and qualifications that provide competent and ethical care are registered to practise.

It works with 15 national boards in all professions registered under the National Registration and Accreditation Scheme to ensure public safety by regulating Australia’s registered health practitioners.

Only a tribunal can cancel a practitioner’s registration, disqualify a person from applying for registration for a time or prohibit a person from using a specified title or providing a selected health service.

National boards refer severe matters to the tribunal in each state and territory.

AHPRA then publishes the tribunal decision and the disciplinary action and court outcomes for a practitioner on an online register.

AHPRA encourages the community to check the public register of all registered health practitioners to check their registration.

Here is the list of Victorian doctors whose registrations have been cancelled, disqualified, or prohibited with conditions since 2022.

Doctors and nurses who have been suspended and are listed on the AHPRA site are included on this list.
