In recent weeks builders have been seen working on the huge Grade 1 listed Elizabethan mansion in Finchingfield, despite the recent collapse of his restaurant empire with the loss of 1,000 jobs. But the scaffolding has now been removed and the extensive grounds tidied, ready for Jamie and his family to move in. Aerial photos of the Spains Hall, which dates back to 1570, show that since Jamie bought the property in January, the gardens have been tended and the grass has been transformed. The lines have been re-painted on the tennis court and the outdoor swimming pool has been cleaned. Jamie has also added garden furniture, as well as a trampoline and a five-a-side football pitch with goals for his five children. The TV chef bought the mansion and 70-acre estate, which comes with fishing lakes, at the start of the year and then applied for planning permission to restore many of its original features. Plans lodged with Braintree District Council show the best-selling author is also hoping to renovate the library and remodel the kitchen, which boasts an original bread oven. He has also applied to add under-floor heating in the pantry. The house had only been used by three families and hadn’t been sold for 250 years when Jamie bought it. The manor house boasts 12 bedrooms, 10 bathrooms, a large games room, great hall, dining room, two drawing rooms and a wine storage area. Original features include a well on the ground floor, a priest hole on the first floor and a two-storey red-brick Tudor gazebo in the gardens, which is named The Prayer house.
