NSW Health has issued a warning after multiple high-dose MDMA (ecstasy) tablets have started circulating in NSW.

A series of pink-orange, blue, and yellow skull-shaped tablets stamped with the word “MYBRAND” on the back have been detected with a higher-than-usual dosage.

The high-dose tablets have been found to contain dipentylone, a synthetic cathinone with stimulant effects.

Other batches of the “MYBRAND” tablets have contained MDMA with ketamine which can be extremely harmful when combined with other stimulant drugs, such as cocaine, synthetic cathinones or amphetamines.

NSW Poisons Information Centre medical director Darren Roberts said ingesting high doses of MDMA has been linked to cases of serious illness and death in NSW.

“MDMA can cause severe agitation, raised body temperature, seizures or fits, irregular heart rhythm and death,” Dr Roberts said.

“The amount of MDMA in a tablet or capsule can vary significantly, even within the same batch.”

He warned that hot environments, such as festivals or indoor dance parties, are particularly dangerous for people who have taken MDMA.

“Taking a break from dancing, seeking shade and drinking water are important measures to reduce the risk of overheating,” Dr Roberts said.

Those who are feeling really hot and sweaty, experiencing a racing heart/pulse or feel light-headed, rigid muscles or confusion and agitation are urged to seek immediate help by calling triple-0.

“It is very important to remember if you or a friend has taken drugs and feel unwell, you won’t get into trouble for seeking medical care.”
