Yibbida! Last laugh for Rex Hunt in footy radio ratings

REX Hunt has turned the tables on his old radio station 3AW with a stunning footy ratings victory with Triple M.

REX Hunt has turned the tables on his old radio station 3AW with a stunning footy ratings victory with Triple M.

Triple M's footy team - which features Hunt alongside James Brayshaw - thumped 3AW on Saturday afternoons.

Triple M grabbed 12.2 per cent of the total audience - well ahead of 3AW (9.4), which includes former Triple M caller Brian Taylor in its line-up.

Hunt, 61, was dumped by 3AW last year.

"It was rejection. I didn't accept the fact that I was gone and would just fade away," he said. "I think the result shows that I have something to give."

Hunt, 61, is so chuffed by the result he plans to keep calling footy for years to come. He recently signed another one-year deal with Triple M.

Hunt was the chief football caller at 3AW for 21 years, but insists he has no ill-will towards his former station.

"Regrets and bitterness are wasted emotions," he said.

"For Triple M to make a position available to an old bloke who was considered past it ... there can't be a drug in the world that can give me the buzz that I've had in 2010 calling the footy."

The latest ratings reveal a case of "all talk, no action" for Melbourne Talk Radio.

Melbourne's newest radio station posted a dismal 1.4 per cent audience share.

Steve Price scored 1.4 per cent in the breakfast slot - a world away from the mammoth 19.2 per cent share for Ross Stevenson and John Burns of 3AW. Red Symons scored 14.9 on 774 ABC.

"This is a figure that I wouldn't expect us to be anywhere near in a year's time," Price said.

"We have to see some real improvement in 12 months, obviously, and we've got to work hard to get to that point."

Neil Mitchell climbed from 15.9 to 17.7 for his 3AW morning show in the latest survey.

Mitchell has been forced to broadcast from home in recent weeks due to a back complaint.

Hamish and Andy continued their drive-time dominance with a 20 per cent share for FOXFM (down from 20.8). Nearest competitor was Derryn Hinch on 3AW with 12.7 (down from 12.9).

Weekend reports suggested Blake and Lee could sever radio ties to concentrate on TV. "We're still in negotiations with them," Austereo CEO Guy Dobson said yesterday.

In the FM breakfast slot jostle, FOX FM's Matt & Jo Show dominated with 11.9 per cent (down from 12.6).
