The Wiggles have laid off staff as the coronavirus continues to decimate the music industry.
One of Australia’s most successful touring acts internationally, the band have had to postpone live shows for new album Fun and Games.
“We’ve had to stand down our beautiful cast, a lot of our dancers, the lady that goes around and sells the merchandise, truck drivers, sound crew – it’s heartbreaking,” Anthony Field said. “We love playing music for people. We can do it online but it’s not the same as actually being there. We’re not alone, all musicians are going through this.”
The band are using the downtime to record new music, including a song and video called Social Distancing last week and plan more Facebook Live concerts to help parents entertain kids at home.
“It’s been really hard, the people who work with us are like family,” Lachlan Gillespie said. “We’re lucky we can make music and film things, but everyone’s experiencing this all over the world, there is no other option at this time. Hopefully it doesn’t last too long and people get through it.”
Meanwhile former Wiggle Greg Page is recovering well after suffering a heart attack on stage during a reformation of the original Wiggles line-up in January.
“He’s good,” Gillespie said. “He’s had a game of cricket recently.”
“Seeing Greg like that put me into a spin,” Field added. “It was horrible but the gig itself was fantastic and Greg was absolutely on fire. We were having a ball. I don’t want to put any pressure on Greg but he’s getting so much better that hopefully we can do another gig next year. Maybe. We’ll have an ambulance on standby for all of us!”
