Wentworth season final recap: The Freak regains her memory and has someone been shivved to death?

Wentworth’s penultimate season has just finished and we left with The Freak regaining her memory and one inmate left for dead on the bathroom floor – but are they really dead? Spoiler warning

So, is Allie Novak dead?

We left this season finale with Allie shivved on the bathroom floor – the shower at Wentworth being the most dangerous location in Australia.

It was that bloody Judy Bryant who stabbed her repeatedly – Allie found out Judy had stolen Lou Kelly’s phone and money. Dangerously Allie didn’t tell anyone else, meaning if Judy killed Allie she’d take the fall for the whole thing.

And as Allie was bleeding out Lou popped into the shower – she was ready to kill Allie too (believing she’d stolen the aforementioned phone and money) but saw someone had beaten her to it.

Reasons Allie will come back next year: She’s Allie. One of the show’s most popular characters who’s survived a hotshot from the Freak and has had such a glow-up this season it’d be sad to see it end like this. Plus as Joan Ferguson has shown, even being buried alive doesn’t mean you’re automatically dead on Wentworth. And if you followed Kate Jenkinson’s social media it seems like she was on set this year filming the final 10 episodes – unless it was all some clever ruse to put fans off the scent?

Reasons Allie won’t come back next year: well she doesn’t look too healthy and Wentworth do not mind killing off key characters – like her ex Bea (RIP).

So what else happened in the finale? Let’s go character by character

Joan ‘The Freak’ Ferguson

Well we finally got some closure in the final few sections. The Freak had come back from court, where Dr Miller told the judge her amnesia was legit. Much to Vera’s horror. She got Linda Smiles to spitbag Ferguson, leading her to have flashbacks in the dark where she saw her Greatest Hits replay – some casual killing and violence – and this season ends with her going “I am Joan Ferguson. I am The Freak.” It took us week after week of dragging out the memory loss, but that’s what we were all waiting for. We also found out her age – 56, for Wentworth trivia buffs.

Vera

Her (understandable) Freak vendetta dialled up to eleven, she even told Will to sack Dr Miller to stop him defending Ferguson in court. Too late!

Boomer

She deserved a much better storyline than the catfish one involving that toerag PC George Garfield from The Bill. There was at least a twist at the end, with her catfisher Gavin revealing he deliberated hunted Boomer down as he runs a fetish website called Slammer for people who want to subscribe and read erotica from genuine prisoners. It’s up there with Orange Is the New Black’s prisoner underwear storyline – so ridiculous it’s probably based in fact.

Lou Kelly

Good episode for Lou. She started by force-feeding Joan Ferguson sushi via her beloved goldfish, which prompts The Freak to remember she saw her father drown her mother in front of her. She’s fighting with Sheila, Marie, Allie … and even boyfriend Reb, who’s been told Lou watched on while the cult leader they escaped sexually assaulted her. Lou tells Reb she actually poisoned the cult members and burnt the place down (the crime Sheila is in jail for) and she’d do it again if it meant helping Reb. That’s why Reb greenlighted Lou killing Allie, believing she’d stolen their cash.

Linda Smiles

Everyone’s favourite bent officer threatens to sue the prison (she’s got PTSD from last season’s siege) and couldn’t have got that spitbag on The Freak’s scone fast enough. Don’t go changing Linda.

Allie

Also a big episode for Allie, pre-shivving. She’s realised being Top Dog is a “poisoned chalice” and before she gets shivved she’s beaten up by Lou, including having her head smashed on a dunny. Ouch. She did re-bond with Marie, who pressed the panic button after that attack (a jail no-no) but Marie wasn’t there when she needed her in the shower. And while have a lot of issues with the wishy-washing camera coverage in Wentworth – the security can be piss poor – Allie accessed the CCTV to find out Judy Bryant stole Lou’s phone.

Marie

That creepy relationship she had with Reb seems to have come to an end. “You’re not my mother and I’m not your f---kng son” Reb tells Marie.

Judy Bryant

If she didn’t have the most divisive storyline of the year – with many viewers not warming to her female Julian Assange arc – she’s only gone and bloody left Allie for dead.

See you next year! Speaking of

Wentworth’s cast and producer on the possibility of a spin-off and why the set is being demolished
