For a mega-event making stadium-size noise, there was deafening silence from officials when support acts for the AFL Grand Final entertainment section were seemingly leaked on Thursday.
3AW broadcaster Ross Stevenson named singer-drummer G Flip, rockers Temper Trap, heritage band Goanna, and footy anthem troubadour Mike Brady, to play at the MCG, alongside headliner Robbie Williams, on September 24.
Industry sources contacted by the Herald Sun confirmed G Flip and Brady as definites. Goanna is performing in Canberra two days before the Grand Final, and has a handy gap in their schedule for a cheeky trip south.
Mushroom Events, which stages the entertainment, referred calls for comment to the AFL.
An AFL spokesman said: “The full lineup for the Telstra AFL Grand Final entertainment showcase will be announced shortly.
“We are working through the final pieces of an amazing Australian line up as we return to the MCG and 100,000 fans for the first time in two years.”
It is not known if any of the mooted support acts will feature in Robbie’s band.
In July, when announcing he will perform at the Grand Final, Williams said he would hand pick his band from a list of local musicians.
Williams said: “I’m really looking forward to performing with a cast of very talented local Australian musicians. I am so excited to be performing for all the fans, on the hallowed turf of the MCG, for the biggest game of the year.”
