Dane Swan has unsurprisingly defended Collingwood defender Brayden Maynard saying he’s shocked by the outrage over the incident with Melbourne’s Angus Brayshaw.
“From all the carry-on you’d dead set think Brayden killed Bambi,’’ Swan tweeted.
“The outrage over an attempted smother is outrageous. Floreat Pica.”
Maynard, who faces the tribunal tonight, also won some support from Wayne Carey, who said he wouldn’t want to see him miss a grand final.
“Not being definitive, there’s only one person on this earth that knows what he was trying to do … all of us are just guessing,’’ he said on his The Truth Hurts Podcast.
“Because it’s in that action, but because someone’s got knocked out, I’m prepared to say he gets a week. He misses a prelim and plays a grand final. Missing a prelim is probably like three (weeks).”
Meanwhile, friends and former foes Brodie Holland and Russell Robertson are at loggerheads over the Maynard bump, with former Pies player Holland labelling Melbourne “a bunch of sooky snitches”.
Robertson, a former high-flying Demon, has dubbed Maynard’s collision with Brayshaw as “not footy act”.
Holland vented on facebook, wondering “how freaking sooky are the Melbourne FC fraternity”.
He said coach Simon Goodwin should have been fined for “dobbing Maynard in like his big sister stole his favourite toy” and said Jack Viney had been carrying on like his mate had been king hit.
“Call me old school but I hate a snitch in football, and through all of these type of mentality’s (sic) and actions at the highest level we are slowly turning the football community into a bunch of sooky snitches,’’ Holland wrote.
“Melbourne should be focused on this week not on what Maynard is doing. Let’s get one thing straight ... it was a freaking accident!”
Robertson posted images of the incident saying it was perfectly put that it was not a footy act.
Bombers chasing sunshine
While some Essendon players were reported as being at the finals matches over the weekend, others have gone chasing some sunshine and good times.
Matt Guelfi posted pictures on Monday in Madrid, Spain with teammates Archie Perkins, Jye Caldwell and Ben Hobbs.
It was reported by the Herald Sun that Essendon vice-captain Andrew McGrath, full-back Jordan Ridley and forward Kyle Langford decided to pay for an Arizona training camp, which 15 players are joining soon.
Last year, dozens of Essendon players lived it up on a high-profile footy trip in Ibiza only weeks after a horror season in which the club’s coach, Ben Rutten, got sacked.
Hardwick special guest on new program
Channel 7’s new footy program Talking Finals is being moved forward from now with special guest Damien Hardwick appearing on Wednesday night.
It debuted last week about 10pm but will air an hour earlier with the new Suns coach a big get.
Host James Brayshaw is joined by Trent Cotchin, Joel Selwood and Tim Watson on the panel.
Elsewhere on Seven, Patrick Dangerfield, who was a guest commentator on the broadcast of Thursday night’s match, has embarked on his caravan road trip with wife Mardi and their three children.
