Former Pussycat Doll Melody Thornton, aka Mirrorball, has been crowned the winner of The Masked Singer Australia 2022.
The final also saw the Hugh Sheridan unmasked as Rooster and Sheldon Riley as Snapdragon – two Aussie entertainers earlier tipped to be underneath the elaborate costumes.
But Mirrorball’s final act, a rendition of Donna Summers Last Dance, still had the judges guessing.
Mel B was certain Mirrorball was Australian singer-songwriter, Samantha Jade, Chrissie Swan hedged her bets on socialite, Nicole Richie, Abbie Chatfield locked in American actress and singer, Hilary Duff, and Dave Hughes stunned the panel with his first correct guess of the season, insisting Mirrorball was Melody Thornton.
Thornton revealed it had been an emotional experience.
“It was just so nice to have lovely comments, and encouragement as well, to bring this character to life,” she said.
“This really helped my relationship with myself. It brought me closer to myself. [Ultimately], you sing because you want other people to be inspired to sing.”
Sheridan said he was drawn to The Masked Singer because of it’s entertainment factor and “the fact that this is a fun show.”
“It’s my sister’s favourite show, my nephew’s favourite show,” he said.
“And I realised, everyone loves it. Last year I had a bunch of friends die, including my Dad … I wanted to do something fun, and I also wanted to do something to cheer up my family. ”
Riley was also emotional as he opened up about his journey from feeling the need to wear a mask, as he has done throughout his career, to finally being brave enough to take it off.
“It’s been a really long road for me,” he said.
“I was diagnosed with Asperger’s as a kid, so people always worried about me … It wasn’t until this show that I realised that I need to be so proud of my talent, and really show people that I don’t need a mask to do what I do.”
MASKED SINGER 2022 COMES TO THE END
Australia has been embracing the colourful costumes, the talent and the panel racking their brains trying to guess just who is behind the mask.
Minds have been blown this year at the level of talent revealed underneath the spectacular designs with international superstars Michelle Williams of Destiny’s Child and Beverly Hills 90210 actor Tori Spelling, joining Shannon Noll, Sam Sparro, Matt Preston, Emma Watkins, Jamie Durie, Pia Miranda, Lisa Curry and Ryan Moloney on the fourth season of The Masked Singer.
While the new faces on the panel – Mel B, Abbie Chatfield and Chrissie Swan – have been nailing the guesses, Hughesy has steadfastly remained in his lane continuing to guess dead celebrities. Swan, who has a hat trick of correct guesses under her belt, has been relentlessly mocking the comedian.
“I can’t wait to see who you think Mirrorball is – Jim Morrison of The Doors perhaps?,” she joked.
As The Masked Singer’s top three head into the grand finale, here’s our tips, along with the judges and Twittersphere’s suggestions.
ROOSTER
Judges: Hugh Sheridan, Glenn Robbins, Rami Malek, Robbie Williams.
Our tip: The Logie-winning triple threat Hugh Sheridan looks to be a sure bet for the cocky Rooster. Clues have included Nepal – he went there to search for his brother Zac after a massive earthquake; or a link to royalty – his late father Denis was known as the King of Swing; and seven eggs – could be referring to his on-screen family in Packed to the Rafters or his real-life family as he’s one of seven children.
Twitter says:
“I sure hope it’s Craig McLachlan. Maybe Hugh Jackman. But I really hope it’s Hugh Jackman.”
“I think Robbie Williams – AFL ball referring to him doing grand finale not in relation to Hugh Sheridan.”
“I’m off the Anthony Warlow train now, and on the Hugh Sheridan train.”
“I think under the Rooster mask is Hugh Jackman. or Zac Efron, Or Robbie Williams.”
SNAPDRAGON
Judges: James Blunt, Sheldon Riley, Hosier, Kevin Jonas.
Our tip: We said right from the moment the first promo was released that Sheldon Riley was underneath the gorgeous Snapdragon – and every spine-tingling beautiful performance since has confirmed that. Other clues continue to reinforce that. Freddie Mercury – he sang a Queen song on The Voice finale; or Golden childhood – he grew up on the Gold Coast; and what about the performance where the shells fell on him – Shelled on. It all adds up.
Twitter says:
“Still thinking Boy George or Lewis Capaldi but leaning toward Lewis tonight.”
“That’s gotta be Sheldon Riley.”
“Sheldon for sure. The glam costume suits.”
“I never get involved in these things, but it’s hands down Darren Hayes. Snap Dragon/Savage Garden”
MIRRORBALL
Judges: Samantha Jade, Hilary Duff, Fergie, Keri Russell.
Our tip: All the clues seems to point to former Pussycat Doll Melanie Thornton being behind the sparkly mask. Too many cooks could reference how she left the girl band. She was almost named Tiffany so the Breakfast at Tiffany picture fits and lipstick matches her song Lipstick and Guilt.
Twitter says:
“Mirror Ball is Italian Celebrity Chef Silvia Colloca. I recognised her from day one.”
“Possibly Ariane Grande?”
“I got Pussycat Dolls from the clues, but not Nicole’s voice. So I think Melody Thornton.”
“Samantha Jade can’t sing like that Jess Mauboy’s voice is completely different. Definitely not them.”
