The White Lotus breakout star Aimee Lou Wood creates and writes new rom-com series

A White Lotus breakout star has stepped behind the camera to create and star in a heartwarming new series.

Aimee Lou Wood won fans over in the latest season of The White Lotus, but now the British actress will wow more viewers in the new rom-com series Film Club, which she co-created and co-wrote with fellow actor Ralph Davis.

The talented duo are not only behind the camera as creatives and executive producers, they also star in the heartwarming six-part series, which premieres on BINGE on October 27.

This is the first time the 31-year-old actress has written something for television, so it was mind-blowing seeing her story come to life with the help of co-stars such as Nabhaan Rizwan and Suranne Jones.

“It was less surreal when I was acting, but more so when I was watching the other cast – it was fascinating seeing them bring what was in our brains out into the world and I loved being around set for the scenes that I wasn’t in,” she told news.com.au to coincide with the trailer’s release today.

“Sometimes I would sit there and go, ‘Gosh, what I was thinking with that?!’ But there were also times when the cast brought their own stories to the table and the scene turns into something different to what you expect, which was really cool.

“It’s that moment when you surrender to the fact that this thing you’ve created in your head isn’t just yours anymore, it’s everyone’s. It’s been so fulfilling.”

Stream Film Club from October 27 on BINGE, available on Hubbl.

In the series, Wood plays an unemployed agoraphobic named Evie who hasn’t left her mum Suz’s (Jones) house in Manchester in six months following a nervous breakdown. Her only contact with the outside world is through her weekly movie nights with uni friends held in her mum’s garage.

But her life is about to be challenged further when her best friend and fellow movie enthusiast Noa (Rizwan) decides to move away for work and their unspoken feelings for each other grow.

“At the start of the series, Evie can’t leave the house – she finds that too overwhelming. But what I love is that she creates worlds within this very restrictive space she exists in, both for herself but also for other people,” Wood said. “She expands her loved one’s horizons from inside that garage – this tiny space can be a parallel world for everyone where they can be silly and free.”

“In many ways, she’s at her most limited because of the mental state she finds herself in, but she also never stops being herself. Lots of people go through times in their life where they aren’t very well and it’s very important to remember that you are still in there somewhere, even if the circumstances you find yourself in are very scary. Evie doesn’t realise at the start that everything she needs she has within her.”

Wood was arguably the breakout star in The White Lotus Season 3.

In the drama, the British star played central character Chelsea, the street-smart yet eternally optimistic girlfriend of Walton Goggins’ tortured character Rick.

The Season 3 finale saw the HBO drama series reach its highest viewership numbers yet. Chelsea and Rick were pivotal players in that finale, which clocked 6.2 million viewers. According to Warner Bros Discovery, this number saw the Mike White series experience a 51 per cent increase from the Season 2 finale.

Just like her character in The White Lotus, Wood says that Evie doesn’t have all the answers in life – and that’s OK.

“I want people to take away that you’re allowed to wobble in life and not know what you’re doing,” she said. “There’s so much pressure in the time that we are living in, where everyone curates their lives on social media and it encourages such comparison, which is the thief of joy. I’d love people to watch this and know that it’s OK to not have all the answers, and that it’s OK to move at your own pace.

“Ultimately all feelings are human, and feelings can become so huge and scary sometimes, but you just have to push through and feel them, open that can of worms.”
