A veteran Block buying advocate has lashed out at the “ridiculous money” spent on the winning home during the shocking final auctions.
During Sunday night’s chaotic finale, eccentric multi-millionaire Danny Wallis gave contestants Omar and Oz the biggest win in the show’s history when he bought their Gisborne property for an eye-watering $5,666,666.66.
Factoring in their $100,000 prize money, it gave the Sydney friends a profit of more than $1.68 million.
All five of the homes had the reserve price of $4,080,000, and despite being almost identical, yielded extremely different results at auction.
Advantage Property Consulting director Frank Valentic – who has bought eight Block homes on behalf of his clients throughout the series – was at the Gisborne auctions, and was scathing of Wallis’ final bid.
“Danny paid ridiculous money, for someone to pay $1.7 million above reserve, they know they paid above and beyond,” Valentic told realestate.com.au, hinting that “some big egos” were present on the day.
The property expert added that he’d shown more than 100 potential buyers through all five of the Block homes, but that the majority had estimated their value "in the high threes, rather than at the $4 million – $4.5 million the show and agents are saying”.
In a distant second place to Omar and Oz were Rachel and Ryan, who were the only other contestants to win a sizeable amount of money, taking home $169,000.50.
Tom and Sarah-Jane made a profit of just $20,000, while the other two teams’ homes were passed in at auction.
