THE LAST OF US

Streaming Sunday 9pm, HBO Max also available on Foxtel

When we last saw Joel (Pedro Pascal, pictured) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) they were heading back to Tommy’s encampment to start anew together. Sure, the world was still crawling with infected flesh-eating monsters, but at least they had each other, right? Wrong. When the series returns, Joel and his adopted daughter are barely on speaking terms. She’s living in the garage and pushing boundaries. Only in a post-apocalyptic world that means going out to kill the undead without adult supervision rather than a sneaky ciggie behind the school shed. Just what has driven this pair apart after they went through so much together (escaping the cannibals, the vigilantes, the infected and the clickers) is unclear. Could it be that Ellie has figured out the truth about what Joel did (in case you’ve forgotten, he killed a whole heap of people to stop them harvesting Ellie’s brain to make a vaccine to save the rest of humanity)? Or is it just typical teenage behaviour? Meanwhile, Joel has managed to make two new enemies as Catherine O’Hara and Kaitlyn Dever join the cast.

THE NARROW ROAD TO THE DEEP NORTH

Streaming Friday, Prime Video

Jacob Elordi (pictured with Odessa Young) cements his place as one of Hollywood’s hottest young talents with another memorably brooding performance in this sweeping saga about the consequences of love and war. Based on Richard Flanagan’s novel of the same name, Elordi plays a gifted young doctor named Dorrigo who embarks on an affair with Amy (Young), the young wife of his uncle (Simon Denny) just as he’s about to be shipped off to war. Captured by the Japanese and held in a brutal prisoner of war camp, memories of Amy sustain Dorrigo as he works tirelessly to keep his fellow inmates alive. Much like The Deer Hunter and Born on the Fourth of July, this series doesn’t shy away from detailing the horrors of warfare and the torturous scenes from the camp will stay with you long after the final credits roll.

TITANIC: THE DIGITAL RESURRECTION

Streaming Friday, Disney+

One hundred and thirteen years after she sank on her maiden voyage and 28 years after Rose (Kate Winslet) let Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) perish in the icy ocean rather than share that piece of floating debris, comes this much hyped documentary. Using exclusive access to cutting-edge underwater scanning technology, including 715,000 digitally captured images, the special unveils the most precise model of the Titanic ever created: a full-scale, 1:1 digital twin that is accurate down to the rivet. This special, which has been three years in the making, has experts such as Captain Chris Hearn, metallurgist Jennifer Hooper, and Titanic analyst Parks Stephenson Parks Stephenson (pictured left to right) offer new insights into what unfolded on that fateful night in 1912.

PARIS AND NICOLE: THE ENCORE

8.30PM, Tuesday, Seven

Paris Hilton is penning an opera. Now there’s a sentence I never expected to write. And I am not the only one who is mystified. Paris’ mum the delightfully dizzy Kathy Hilton (currently bringing the comedy to the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills with her facial expressions and vague remarks) seems genuinely perplexed when her daughter announces she has an opera in the works based on a silly song she used to warble. That’s until Kathy decides she wants to direct the upcoming production in the hopes of creating a “pop culture extravaganza”. Kathy’s plan is to let ferrets lose in the theatre and hire men on stilts to create a show that is “Studio 54 meets Charlie, Willy Wonky.” That’s Kathy speak for Willy Wonka. It’s all to mark the 20th anniversary of The Simple Life, the reality show that saw Paris and her bff Nicole Ritchie living in rural Arkansas.

Having developed a taste for the finer things in life –and with an insurmountable number of bills still to pay for his ungrateful family’s lavish lifestyle – Andrew decides the only way forward is to start stealing from his wealthy neighbours. Figuring they’re too rich and spoiled to notice a few million-dollar paintings and luxury watches have gone missing, Andrew’s double-life as a burglar should be smooth sailing. Only, even with the best laid plan in place, Andrew finds himself in ever deepening trouble.

SCRUBLANDS: SILVER

Streaming tomorrow, Stan

Picking up several months after amateur sleuth Martin Scarsden (Luke Arnold, pictured) uncovered why a young priest opened fire on his congregation and we find the investigative journalist now something of an overnight celebrity. In the midst of a book tour, Martin is dragged back to the small fishing town where he grew up by Mandy (Bella Heathcote) for a weekend getaway. Already anxious about returning to the people and the place he left behind as a teenager to pursue his journalism career, Martin’s homecoming is upended when his childhood buddy is found murdered with Mandy the chief suspect. Unlike the first season, which was more of a whydunit mystery, this four-part sequel is very much a straight whodunnit that offers up plenty of tantalising plot twists and intriguing suspects.

Streaming 6pm, Tuesday, 7Plus

Remember the 1991 movie, Regarding Henry where Harrison Ford played a high-flying lawyer who rediscovers his humanity after a gunshot wound robs him of his memory? Well, this series follows a similar moral epiphany from amnesia storyline only this time it’s a doctor with a brain injury who regains her bedside manner after a car accident. Before the collision Amy (Molly Parker, pictured) was the brusque chief of internal medicine at a Minneapolis hospital who had alienated everyone around her – including her husband (Omar Metwally). Now back at work, where she’s forced to work under the very doctors she once bullied, Amy finds herself becoming a far more attentive phsyician and colleague as she treats a patient in liver failure.

JANE

Streaming Friday, Apple TV+

Picture Greta Thunberg with the magical mind of the Muppet Babies and you have this kids’ series about a budding environmental activist with a very active imagination. Heading into its third season we find Jane Garcia (Ava Louise Murchison) as she daydreams about spending time with a hippo in her Canadian backyard with the help of her best buddy David (Mason Blomberg) and Greybeard, a stuffed toy chimpanzee (who comes to life when there’s no adults around). Whilst on this pretend safari, the kids teach young viewers all about hippos and the impact that rubbish has on their habitat. With lots of great CGI (akin to what you would find in Night at the Museum or Jumanji) this series spoon feeds littlies important life lessons about conservation.

CLAIRE HOOPER’S HOUSE OF GAMES

7.30pm, Monday, ABC

Former Great Australian Bake Off host Claire Hooper takes a very chilled out approach to her quiz show compering duties in this new series. For starters, all of her guests – TV personality Zan Rowe, breakfast radio host Bob Murphy, one time Project panellist Pete Helliar and recent jungle evictee Geraldine Hickey – luxuriate in comfy armchairs which gives the whole affair the vibe of a playing trivial pursuit at a mate’s house rather than a hyper competitive TV quiz show. Engaging in a series of silly wordplay games (which, are a far less taxing version of the sort of headscratchers Baby John Burgess once presided over) the celebrities coyly answer and giggle their way through the proceedings in the hopes of nabbing bragging rights and one of the purposefully naff prizes on offer.

After a predictably critical inspection by real estate guru Andrew Winter, Dee lets landscaper Dennis Scott and interior designer Wendy Moore loose on the house to work their magic. And she’s reduced to tears when she sees what they do.
