The Crown Season 3 – Trailer

The Crown may portray the dignified ways of the British monarchy, but according to Vanessa Kirby, there were a few raunchy sex scenes featuring The Queen that almost went to air.

According to the star, showrunners ultimately decided that “no one wants to see the Queen having sex”.

The actress, who played Princess Margaret in seasons one and two of the popular series following the lives and scandals of the British royal family, opened up about the scrapped scenes on British journalist Dolly Alderton’s podcast Love Stories .

Speaking on the podcast, she revealed intimate scenes featuring the Queen, played by Claire Foy, and Prince Philip, played by Matt Smith were initially planned to be much more explicit.

While sex is implied in a few scenes from both seasons, it is never more than a flirty moment between the two.

“There was a sex scene between Elizabeth and Philip in the first season,” Kirby shared.

“I think they were in South Africa filming, and they were like ‘I just don’t think anyone wants to see the Queen having sex.’”

Speaking about her own risque scenes as Princess Margaret, including dancing in her bedroom in just her bra, straddling a man on a chair, and posing for a naked photo shoot, she said she, too, had raunchier scenes that were scrapped.

“There was one (sex scene) written in The Crown, in episode seven of (season two).

“We had long discussions about what it should be, and it just became clear that to titillate was not the aim.”

She added: “With Margaret, I was like, ‘no one wants to see royal boob, not really’.”

The discussed scene didn’t make it on to the show in the end, along with another which showed sex with “lots of different positions”.

According to Kirby, the Queen is said to be quite happy with the portrayal, the star having once overheard Princess Eugenie say “Granny is a big fan”.

We’re sure she’s gearing up for season 3 as enthusiastically as we are, with Olivia Coleman on board as Queen Elizabeth and Helena Bonham Carter signed on to play Princess Margaret.

It’s pegged to be “the most scandalous season yet”.

The Crown season 3 will be available to stream on Netflix from November 17
