One of The Voice contestants went “off script” during Sunday’s episode, leaving host Sonia Kruger and the coaches in a momentary panic.
South Australian performers Yorke Heath and Jenna Hudson went head-to-head during the all-important battle rounds on the Channel 7 reality show, a particularly personal pairing given the duo are in a long-term relationship.
After their performance of Paramore’s The Only Exception, it was Yorke who pipped his girlfriend to head onto the next round, with coach Kate Miller-Heidke choosing him over Jenna.
Moments afterwards, Yorke paused formalities to go “off script”, with the camera quickly panning to the mystified coaches. Meanwhile, a confused Kruger looked to the side of the stage before saying, “What’s happening?”
“I just have to say one thing, really quickly, sorry,” Yorke began. “Baby, can you please come down here for a second,” he gestured for Jenna to join him.
“I know we’ve just had a big battle and we were competing, but I think we found through that we work really well as a team,” he continued before getting down on one knee and pulling out a ring.
“I want to be on your team forever. I love you so much. Will you marry me?”
A speechless Jenna, breaking down in tears, said, “Oh my god, yes!”
The crowd erupted in applause as Jenna flashed her new sparkler before showing off her ring to the coaches.
“To the bride and groom,” Kruger celebrated as the happy couple walked offstage hand-in-hand.
Jenna, a popular TikTok star who goes by the social media name ‘Jenna With The Pink’, later said she “had absolutely no idea what [Yorke] was about to do.”
“I felt a little awkward, as I remember thinking it was the judges’ turn to talk, not ours,” she laughed.
Yorke, for his part, said he was nervous about the ring box falling out of his pocket mid-performance.
“I remember thinking, ‘don’t lose the Gerard McCabe ring.’ I had it in my pocket all day and I was nervous it was going to fall out on stage, or that I would lose it,” he said.
The couple, who now live in Sydney, first met in a supermarket six years ago.
The Voice continues Monday at 7.30pm on Channel 7
