Logies 2016: Gogglebox’s Yvie Jones and Angie Kent offer their predictions
THEY watch more TV than just anyone in the country. So who do Gogglebox critics Yvie Jones and Angie Kent tip to win at the Logies?
Reality
Don't miss out on the headlines from Reality. Followed categories will be added to My News.
FOR Gogglebox’s Yvie Jones, Logies night is always reason to celebrate.
Having avidly tuned in to the awards show every year growing up, watching Australia’s TV elite — at the time led by entertainment legends including Graham Kennedy, Don Lane and Bert Newton — celebrating the night was one of her favourite events of the year.
“To me, the Logies and the Oscars are equal,” she says.
“In fact, I actually get more excited about the Logies because there are people that you could actually touch. I think they’re hilarious and wonderful and it’s such a good memory for me. I watch it every year.”
But in 2016 that celebration will be a little different. Along with her flatmate Angie Kent, she’ll be watching the ceremony at the same time that they’re being filmed watching it.
Not only that, but Gogglebox is also up for a Logie. And the thought that they could potentially win — and then see their reaction to winning the following week on the show — blows both of the popular Goggleboxers’ minds.
“It’s a little bit like (the movie) Inception I think,” laughs Yvie of the way the night could unfold. “When we watch the Logies it’s going to get real.”
Accompanied by their, at current count, six rescue dogs (“we’ve got so many dogs they’re coming out of our ears,” laughs Angie), the pair will bring a bottle of bubbly and a bowl of popcorn to the couch as they wait to see if an award comes their way.
But they’re equally as excited to see what makes the Logies such a must-watch event — the red carpet gowns and the unscripted slip ups.
“I love to see what everyone’s wearing,” says Angie.
“You just hope somebody’s wearing a catastrophe of a gown,” interjects Yvie.
“And I love all the horrible (red carpet) interviews which are just so awkies and cringy,” admits Angie.
This year, the pair said that while some of the award categories are a little predictable — “we play it pretty safe in this country,” says Yvie — they’re pleased to see the diversity of what we watch on television reflected this year.
“I think seeing Waleed Aly and Lee Lin Chin on the Gold Logie list and dramas like Redfern Now and The Principal get nominations are great,” says Yvie.
“It’s good to see diversity, not just in acting but in personalities.”
Because while Gogglebox may air on Foxtel and Channel 10, just like the list of Logie nominees, the shows the cast watch on the show range across all networks, genres and timeslots.
And that makes them — and their fellow Goggleboxers — uniquely placed to predict who will take out the big categories this year. Read on for their top tips.
