Olivia Newton-John was a 'class act' and will be 'forever remembered'

Grease is still the word and the winner.

As Nine and Seven interrupted usual programming to pay tribute to beloved performer Olivia Newton-John on Tuesday night, Nine’s choice to screen Grease paid off.

The classic movie clocked up almost twice the number of viewers than Seven’s biopic mini-series Olivia: Hopelessly Devoted to You.

Nationally, 618,000 tuned in to the movie which shot Newton-John to international superstardom, while Olivia with Delta Goodrem starring as her idol and mentor, attracted 329,000 viewers.

Seven will still air the second part of the mini series on Wednesday night.

HOW AUSSIE TV WILL HONOUR OLIVIA

Australian TV networks delayed launching new shows as they paid tribute to legendary performer Olivia Newton-John after her death at the age of 73.

Seven re-screened the first part of Olivia Newton-John: Hopelessly Devoted to You Tuesday night at 9.10pm, replacing Harry Palmer: The Ipcress File.

The second instalment will air on Wednesday night after MKR.

The 2018 miniseries saw Delta Goodrem as a young Olivia performing on Australian television and reluctantly blossoming into a global superstar.

Goodrem received mixed reviews for her performance.

The cast also featured Kate Jenkinson, Georgia Flood, Robyn Malcolm, Todd Lasance and George Xanthis.

The biopic spans more than five decades of ONJ’s extraordinary life charting Olivia’s astonishing personal life and trailblazing persona through one of the world’s toughest industries.

Both Harry Palmer: The Ipcress File and Martin Clunes: Islands of the Pacific will now screen next Tuesday and Wednesday.

Nine screened the mega-movie, Grease, which propelled our Olivia to worldwide stardom, straight after The Block on Tuesday night pushing back the launch of the second season of The Hundred with Andy Lee to next Tuesday.

An ABC spokesman said there were no plans for special programming additions but fans could delve into iView and discover 7.30 The Interviews: Olivia Newton-John and John Farnham Together Again, Classic Countdown: Extended Interview: Olivia Newton-John and Rewind: Olivia Newton-John 1971.

Breakfast TV shows devoted much of their programming to special tributes and rolling coverage of Newton-John’s death at 73 on Tuesday.

Stefanovic consoled Wilkins, getting out of his chair to hug him.

“Oh buddy, your relationship with her was so beautiful,” he said, hugging his mate.

Langdon added: “For you to be here this morning, Dickie …”

Wilkins said: “I’m still numb.

“I’ve got nothing more to say. Her life speaks for itself,” he said between tears.
