Neighbourly dispute gets ugly as years-long dispute over inner-Sydney easement boils over

A neighbourly dispute has gotten ugly after a years-long dispute over an inner-Sydney easement boiled over in dramatic vision.

Neighbour feud erupts in backyard brawl

A dispute over a small easement in an inner-Sydney suburb has dramatically boiled over, with two neighbours locked in a physical altercation caught on video.

The issue over who exactly owns the small strip of land between houses has caused years of tension. It all boiled over when local homeowner Garnet was approached by his angry neighbour Grayson when he was attempting to move a fence outside the latter’s property.

Garnet says Grayson had no right to take up space that was not included in his title.

Grayson got physical and pushed Garnet up against a wall, in an altercation that has now made it to Channel 9’s A Current Affair and beyond.

He dramatically threatened to turn the circular saw back on Garnet and also kicked and punched him in the groin.

“He was like, ‘I’m going to do you in’,” Garnet told Channel 9.

“He seemed very irate and I said ‘do you want to hit me? Go on, hit me’.

“I didn’t expect him to, but he grabbed the saw and wouldn’t let got of it.

“Then he actually started swinging and kneed me in the balls, and then punched me in the balls.

“Fortunately he didn’t connect too hard so it didn’t hurt too much.

“But still, it’s a little troublesome when your neighbour gets that physical with you.”

Garnet says he and his brother have been having issues with their neighbour ever since they bought the Redfern property in 2019, claiming Grayson told them they have to “obey my rules” when a dispute over parking arose.

The issue gets murkier given terraces have a ‘peace of the easement’ clause attached to the property title.

“The problem is, nobody knows who owns it,” Garnet said. “Our property, strangely, goes all the way to the back wall and one metre goes into Grayson’s property and the neighbour between us and Grayson.

“The city is rife with laneways, nobody knows who owns them.”The City of Sydney council refuses to take sides in the dispute, believing all residents should share the space.

Grayson has not been contactable since the event.
