Just a week into its revival, Deal Or No Deal has awarded a staggering amount of cash to one contestant in need in an emotionally-driven episode.
Monday night’s episode of the Channel 10 game show, hosted by Grant Denyer, saw business student Jessica Fraser win $91,700, just a few thousand dollars short of the top $100,000 prize.
And the money is set to change her life: The 21-year-old, who was born without her left hand, is now able to afford a prosthetic.
In scenes rarely witnessed on the show, Jessica had luck on her side as low-sum cases were ruled out early on, with the final two cases each holding $75,000 and $100,000.
This saw her presented with a bank offer of $91,7000, which Jessica ruled as a “deal”. It turned out to be the right call, with Jessica’s onstage case holding $75,000.
Her family members were in the audience for her life-changing win, as they broke down in tears as she took the offer.
“I love my job, but today, I really love my job,” Denyer said. “We couldn’t be more happy for [you].”
Jessica’s newly-purchased prosthetic hand will have a socket with interchangeable attachments that will allow her to do a range of things she’s never been able to do.
Denyer told news.com.au he was “so proud” the show was able to help people through personal struggles.
“Shows always say they’re changing lives, but this time, it was real,” he said.
“Some serious good has been done. Jess is an angel who played a fierce game, and proved how The Deal can truly improve someone’s life.
“I never expected to be able to help people through some unimaginable struggles, but this show is uplifting lives for the better and it’s filling my heart with joy. This is not just a TV show.
“It’s fun, exciting and full of heart, and I’m so proud of that.”
The return of Deal Or No Deal was announced late last year following a ten-year hiatus, with game show stalwart Denyer confirmed as host.
“I’m probably the best I’ve ever been. The moment you see me on stage, you’ll know, ‘He’s back to the old GD, he’s doing high kicks and jumping up and down, and being lifted in the air by contestants’,” Denyer told us last week.
“It’s the full GD experience … don’t worry about that.”
The series, once a ratings juggernaut, originally aired on Seven from 2003 until 2013 with Andrew O’Keefe at the helm.
Deal Or No Deal airs weekdays on Channel 10 at 6pm
